There is one position that Rangers are said to be actively looking to recruit for, a defensive midfielder, number six, whatever your preferred name is for someone capable of breaking up play and protecting the back four.

So far, we’ve been linked with Colombians, a Dutch youth cap, a Croatian and have missed out on an Austrian who claimed we offered him a contract, but, as yet, we have been unsuccessful in our attempts to strengthen the engine room.

John Lundstram has been added but, as we’ve seen from his interviews, he is the natural number eight or box-to-box midfielder that will look to assist at both ends of the park, however, he is the type of signing that we need in the more defensive role.

The best way to explain it is with an example. Kalvin Phillips, at 25-years old, is now valued at over £25million on Transfermarkt, however, in reality, he would probably cost around three times that amount.

But, he didn’t always have this profile. At 21, you could have picked him up for a similar fee to the one we paid for Joe Aribo, he had no England youth caps and wasn’t a regular in Leeds United’s first-team – and yet with good coaching he has become a fantastic player and, arguably, one of the players of the tournament in the European Championships.

Our recruitment team is finally one that we can trust, and who knows, we could be in negotiations for the next Kalvin Phillips as we speak.
