At this time of year, playgrounds will have been full of kids asking each other what they want for Christmas, hoping that Santa Claus brings them exactly what they want.

It’s no different as an adult except we have other needs – new players in the January window please.

Yes, it’s after Christmas, but still, you get my point and these are the five players I hope we get tied up either for the immediate, or not so distant future, in no particular order.

Gustavo Hamer

A real box-to-box midfielder currently starring for Coventry City in the Championship who is approaching the last 18-months of his contract and could well be known to Giovanni van Bronckhorst given his time in the Eredivisie. Perfect for a team that plays with two in the engine room and are asked to contribute at both ends of the park.

Francis Amuzu

We need a right winger that can score goals and the Belgian youth international is posting decent numbers per minute played for Anderlecht this season, in an ideal world I’d want Andreas Skov Olsen but he will probably be out of our price range unless there is movement in the opposite direction.

John Souttar

The no brainer of no brainers. His injury troubles are behind him and he is now finding his best form, Scottish, available on a pre-contract and of better quality than Jack Simpson and Niko Katic, an instant upgrade.

Danilho Doekhi

The must have option to replace Connor Goldson if the vice-captain isn’t going to extend his contract and, if I’m being honest, I’d want the towering Dutch centre-half anyway – the perfect player for our player trading model. At 22-years old he has a bright future and has the potential to be the best defender at the club, on a free.

Randal Kolo Muani

Now this is wishful thinking. The Nantes striker is going to be in-demand as soon as he is able to speak to other clubs in January and alongside Eddie Nketiah, is a player that normally wouldn’t be in our price range except when a transfer fee doesn’t have to be paid. Like Doekhi, he is destined for bigger and better things.

I’m sure Ross Wilson has got everything in hand, however, a little nudge in the right direction never goes a miss and if he happens to see this list, you never know, my wish might just come true after all…
