Ibrox return for centre-half a no-brainer for Wilson

Every Rangers fan knows that we have an issue at the heart of our defence and should look to add reinforcements in January.

Vital Rangers has long sung the praises of John Souttar as a cheap and viable option but perhaps we have been looking at the wrong Hearts centre-half after Saturday’s disappointing draw.

Craig Halkett is well known to most Rangers fans, he was allowed to leave Ibrox when perhaps he was a better option than others that were available or signed instead of giving him a chance, he first built his reputation at Livingston which earned his move to the capital and now – after a setback last season – is showing why he deserves to be at one of the league’s better teams.

Halkett, like Souttar, is also out of contract at the end of the season and would be an even cheaper option than Souttar he also doesn’t have the injury history of his younger defensive partner, there is also the fact that he was linked with a move to Rangers in Steven Gerrard’s first season.

For all that he might not have the ability of Filip Helander, you won’t find many Rangers fans that would trust Jack Simpson or Calvin Bassey over Halkett, especially if he was asked to deputise in domestic fixtures.

It’s clear that we need someone else in, preferably someone who is as low risk and low cost as possible without having to tolerate a poorer quality option, Walter Smith, Alex McLeish and Dick Advocaat were all successful in Scotland and they had more than a few local players in their squads – with one eye on the Europa League and their quotas, the more Scots – of a good standard – the better.
