Whilst Rangers fans look forward to seeing what new players will be coming in this summer and being distracted by reports of talks with Colombian strikers, there is a fear that we will spend most of the transfer window also looking over our shoulders, worried about what ones might be departing.

After two colossal performances in the Europa League and Scottish Cup finals – in two different positions – Calvin Bassey is very much a man in demand with The Times claiming today that Aston Villa are “closing in on a deal” for the 22-year old:

“Aston Villa are ready to step up their pursuit of the Rangers defender Calvin Bassey after his standout season in which he starred in both the Europa League and Scottish Cup finals.

“Steven Gerrard is set to raid his former club as Villa look to strengthen in defence ahead of the new season.”

Bassey is far from the finished article and, for all that he would be an excellent signing for the former Rangers boss, I can’t help but think he would be better off going for Connor Goldson, without whom, the Nigerian wouldn’t be anywhere near as developed.

I’d also be surprised if our young player of the year doesn’t have better offers than Villa, after all, the way that he played against three Bundesliga teams will surely have some of the big teams sitting up and taking notice, Bayern Munich already named as an admirer.

The player himself has said that he is happy where he is, however, we all know how this could play out, anything over the £20million mark and it would be impossible to turn down – buckle up, this could be a bumpy ride.

I think if Gerrard and Aston Villa come calling he will go, but remains to be seen

  • Robert says:

If its over £30m then we can sit down and discuss. If not then we enjoy this cracking player for another season

  • DOUGLAS MCNABB says:

The player in question is still under contract and should only be allowed to leave if the price is right for Rangers . Rangers are in a rebuild process and with that in mind a price of 20million or above should be the price tag for a player who is still developing and has already showen his quality and strengths.

Gerrard better start at £40m for Bassey if Gio n Ross let him go FO less look at Maguire £60m and Bassy is already a better footballer and has loads of time to get better i would rather he went to Germany Ang Goldson went to Stevie G to warm his bench.
