Getting man of the match in a Scottish Cup final isn’t going to make many headlines, however, when you do it in a different position to the one that you got man of the match in a Europa League final then it’s no surprise that some of the continent’s top teams are starting to pay attention to the exploits of Calvin Bassey.

It’s not only clubs that are looking at the Nigerian international with other fans starting to take notice too, Bassey being second only to Kylian Mbappe on Transfermarkt in terms of players that are being searched, another indication that his name is being talked about.

After the Scottish Cup final, the 22-year old made it clear that he has no plans to leave the club and that he sees his future at Rangers but we all know that football isn’t as simple as that and that if an offer comes in that’s too good to be true then there isn’t much else we can do.

At the last count there were several top Premier League clubs and Bayern Munich mentioned, put it this way, ones with deep pockets who certainly shouldn’t be expecting to pick him up for anywhere near his £900,000 Transfermarkt valuation.

Bassey could, realistically, break the Scottish transfer record and yet when he was signed – almost –  nobody knew him unless they had been paying attention to the Premier League Under-23 league seeing as he had never made a single senior appearance for anyone.

Picked up for a bargain fee, when he does leave, he will leave for a fortune proving that the reserve teams for England’s top flight shouldn’t be scoffed at when we are looking for potential bargains – if they have the right mental attitude and application to go with the technical ability needed to play for Rangers then, as Bassey has shown, they could go right to the top.
