Rangers striker hunt has intensified this weekend after news broke that Fashion Sakala is in “advanced talks” with the Ibrox side and now, it has emerged that Britt Assombalonga – with 141 senior goals –  is willing to take a pay cut to sign for Steven Gerrard, with a deal “close” to completion, according to TEAMtalk.

Both strikers have a decent pedigree with Assombalonga once commanding a £15million transfer fee, the good news though is that he wouldn’t cost anywhere near that amount because he is out of contract in the summer and although the DR Congo international hasn’t had the greatest scoring record of late, he is a player who will be in demand.

This, of course, increases the speculation surrounding the futures of Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe both of whom would leave a significant hole in terms of goals in the squad.

There have been reports that the enigmatic Colombian is going to stick around for next season, a crack at the Champions League tempting him into staying, however, as always, if the price is right and his valuation is met there is every chance that he could be sold – as for Defoe, his reduced availability and minutes on the pitch make it hard to justify offering him another deal, particularly when he has no sell on value, regardless of how reliable he is when selected.

Ross Wilson has proved to be a shrewd operator in the transfer market since he arrived at Rangers, particularly in the pre-contract and free transfer market an area that it looks like he will be focussing on again to improve the squad depth and quality without breaking the bank.
