The Super League debacle is far from over with UEFA planning to hammer the “breakaway” teams after their incredible display of ignorance that ended in spectacular fashion.

But there has been an additional potential benefit to Rangers from the fall out with claims that the coefficient Champions League places that would have been handed out to teams with historically good performances are set to be scrapped.

Speaking to Football Insider, Kieran Maguire, author of the Price of Football, explains how this could make a huge difference to the club:

“That would be huge for Rangers.

“They don’t need an incentive to try and win the Premiership given the antipathy between themselves and Celtic.

“But the knowledge of those guaranteed rewards would certainly allow both clubs potentially to invest much more in their squads.

“You normally get around £30m for getting into the group stages of the Champions League, and that’s a minimum.

“If they can have that guaranteed under the new UEFA plans, that can only be a good thing in terms of their financial planning and things of that nature.”

UEFA do seem intent on coming down hard on the “Super League 12” despite them not going ahead with their plans and with the Scottish Premiership now getting two places in the Champions League it would only take a small adjustment to see us get automatic entry into the group stages and the guaranteed revenue that Maguire mentions.

Rangers will be guaranteed group stage football in Europe next season in one of the three competitions regardless, however, a return to the top table would help not only the bank balance but those in charge or recruiting new players too.
