Rangers biggest problem when it comes to the January transfer window is the middle of the park, there was no better an example of where reinforcements were needed than when we had to field both Scott Arfield and Steven Davis against Ajax in the Champions League.

One direction that Ross Wilson might take is to return to previous targets, Kemar Roofe’s continuing injury problems suggest that Davie Selke could be revisted with the Hertha Berlin striker being allowed to leave in January.

As for midfield, it would be a surprise if Nicolas Raskin isn’t looked at again, the Belgium Under-21 international is out of contract at the end of the season and was heavily linked with us before the transfer window shut, at the time suggesting that he will now see out his time at Standard Liege, as reported by The Daily Record:

“Yes, I will still be here (Standard), of course.

“There is no longer any question of a departure. We will see what the future will bring but for the moment I am 100 per cent here.

“I hope that we will win as many matches as possible and be able to do a nice little thing this year.”

If Rangers are able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement it may be that a deal could be negotiated with Liege to bring him in sooner. Originally he was being targeted to replace Glen Kamara and was close to joining but, with Ryan Jack breaking down again, he would now be required to add depth and possibly start alongside John Lundstram.

There is a lot of work that needs to be done to the squad but midfield is looking especially light, being able to get a quality addition for free would be a smart bit of business and allow money to be spent elsewhere – whether or not it is spent wisely is another matter.
