Rangers have been given the green light to return for a summer transfer target after it was revealed that he is being allowed to leave in January for free.

Davie Selke, currently at Hertha Berlin, is a 27-year old striker who has been deemed surplus to requirements. A former Germany Under-21 international with nine goals in 15 appearances, he once commanded a fee of £7million when he moved to RB Leipzig and then to his current club.

With just a goal or assist every four games, he is yet to fully realise the potential that he had as a youngster in the Bundesliga and, after snubbing a move to Rangers in the summer, Selke has now been granted a free transfer according to German publication Bild, via HITC – his contract is due to expire in the summer.

With Alfredo Morelos in limbo and Kemar Roofe nowhere near being a reliable option, we need to secure quality backup as soon as possible and Selke would be an easy and affordable option.

Given his age and experience, he would be ready to make an immediate impact and wouldn’t be getting signed as a project player. Antonio Colak would also have competition in the shape of a motivated striker keen to make an impact rather than one who seems to have their nose put out of joint because they are no longer first choice.

It’s one of many areas that need to be strengthened and Ross Wilson really needs to have a good window in January to get fans back on board, anything less than success could be curtains.
