Rangers fans, it’s safe to say, were expecting a new player or two after Giovanni van Bronckhorst guided us to the land of milk and honey that is the Champions League.

Names like Evander, Ross Barkley and Nicolas Raskin have been mentioned and it would appear as if it is the latter that we have been closest to getting through the door with Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri claiming on his Twitter page that a contract had been offered:

”Nicolas #Raskin was close to joining the #RangersFC . Priority of Ross Wilson, the Scottish offered a written contract of 4 years. An offer was to arrive this afternoon on the table of the leaders of Liège in the event of (aborted) departure from Glen #Kamara … #RSCL“

As a more defence minded midfielder it did seem a strange link when it first arose, after all, it is the one type of player that we are well catered for and, as already hinted at by Vital Rangers, the Belgian Under-21 international seemed like he would be a replacement rather than addition to the squad.

Deadline day started with stories about possible interest in Glen Kamara from Nice, however, the Ligue 1 outfit went with another target – not that I’m convinced we would have sanctioned such a transfer so late in the window and with so many big games on the horizon though.

With less than three hours of the window remaining and not even the slightest hint of a rumour, it’s probably safe to go to bed without the fear of missing out on something.

Ah well, there’s always January.
