Beale’s striker hint could see return for long-term target

Michael Beale knows that he will need to add a striker at some point in the next six-months and has admitted already that he is targeting one in particular. He might be open and honest, however he isn’t willing to give up a name just yet.

Vital Rangers has run the rule over a few potential names but long-term target Josh Maja would remain the player that I would want to see us bring in.

He is available on a free transfer in the summer, is a good age in terms of potential development and has been showing the sort of form for Bordeaux that suggests he is finally fulfilling his potential.

Speaking ahead of our mid-week league game with Hearts, Beale was asked about targets for this window with time running out but also admitted that he already has one eye on a summer acquisition, as reported by The Rangers Review:

“I’d like to bring another No.9 that’s different to the ones we’ve got. My eyes are on that, I have my target on that but that target is probably not available right now but will be in the summer.

“I don’t want to give him any names on that because someone else might like him but I’ve got my eye on a very specific player for the summer. I’m hoping we will be able to do that then.”

Maja is an important player for Bordeaux just now in that he is leading the line for them as they chase promotion back to Ligue 1, the Nigeria international is also different to what we have just now in that he is a hybrid of Alfredo Morelos and Antonio Colak. Not quite as physical as Morelos, not quite as good a finisher as Colak but, perhaps, a more rounded player overall.

If we can bring in a new striker without breaking the bank then we will be in a good place, the additions that we have made so far in January suggest that it will be fine tuning rather than an overhaul which should give Ross Wilson more time to prioritise on a number nine and a goalkeeper – and he has to get them both right.
