Rangers head coach Michael Beale continues to be linked with a move away from Ibrox and with a first managerial role, Steven Gerrard not surprised that someone of his calibre is attracting interest.

There has though been nothing concrete or a formal approach as confirmed by the Gers gaffer, however, his tactics guru will leave his side one day, a sentiment shared by Gerrard’s former England colleague, as told to Football Insider:

“There are a lot of coaches that think ‘You know what, I’ve done this role for so long, I would really like to have a go at being a manager’.

“If I was Cardiff I’d be thinking ‘He’s done well at every club he’s been at, he’s obviously a very, very good coach. Yes, let’s give it a go’.

“If he got offered that chance, it would be difficult to say no and not take that opportunity.

“If it goes wrong he can always go back to Rangers as a coach.

“If you don’t try, you probably regret not trying and giving it a go.”

Mills talks about other number 2s that made the step up into management and how it doesn’t always work, but in a week where we lost Walter Smith after a long battle with illness, it can be easy to forget that some of the best managers started their apprenticeships as an understudy.

He is right though, and Beale has admitted himself that one day he will want to strike out on his own, making sure that he chooses the right club is key to climbing the footballing ladder and making a success of life in the hot seat – Cardiff City? I’m not sure that is the right club.
