Steven Gerrard would take the Aston Villa job if it was offered to him.

That is the opinion of former Celtic player and current pundit, Chris Sutton.

First it was Newcastle, then Spurs, now Villa – could it just be that the Rangers manager is doing a very good job with his coaching team and as a consequence many top clubs would be interested in their services?

Pretty much, that’s it.

However, Sutton is never shy to be ‘on message’ at Parkhead, whilst simulataneously stirring the pot regarding the champions in Glasgow, or selectively making comments on current matters in the Scottish game.

With Villa on a poor run at present, it is understood that current boss Dean Smith is facing pressure. At the weekend, Sutton was on duty with BBC Radio 5 Live and in discussion with a fan, it was suggested that the Rangers boss should be their next target to which he responded:

“Steve Gerrard would take the Villa job. If he was offered the job, he would.”

Would he now? On Sutton’s part, his comment was pure speculation and opinion – nothing more to it.

In recent weeks, Gerrard has firmly closed down any talk of him moving, any time soon – it is very, very unikely and that is the reality of the situation.

Everyone knows that the Liverpool job is the one he covets, one day. Apart from that, there are few jobs, if offered, that will tempt the Liverpool legend away from Glasgow before the end of his contract.
