One criticism of Giovanni van Bronckhorst was that there sometimes seemed to be no discernible shape or system being implemented on a weekly basis and that by chopping and changing game plans every week players were often confused about what exactly it was they were supposed to be doing.

This is an accusation that could never be thrown at Michael Beale as part of Steven Gerrard’s coaching team.

In and out of possession we knew – and unfortunately so did the opposition sometimes –  what to expect and if there is anything that Beale will bring to this Rangers team it is a return to the organisation that made him so popular the first time around.

Day one of training has also provided a welcome flashback, Ryan Kent attacking centrally and producing a good finish following some one-touch build-up play did not get missed by Rangers fans hoping to see him back to his best and a more dynamic style of football being played.

“Bealeball” had a lot of simple principles at its core and it wasn’t that long ago that the players were implementing those ideas, it also shouldn’t take long for the others to get up to speed and we have a much better squad than the one that Gerrard and his coaching team walked in to.

If day one is anything to go by, the players are already getting the hang of it.
