There are areas of concern in the Rangers squad that will need to be addressed by Ross Wilson and Michael Beale and finding reliable and competent attacking depth is high up that list.

We have no idea what Alfredo Morelos will emerge from this World Cup enforced break or if Kemar Roofe will ever be able to stay fit for more than a couple of weeks. This is no way to expect a manager to operate, never mind for a club expecting to compete on several fronts.

One name that has been linked to Rangers in the past and would add to our homegrown quota is Ross Stewart, the Sunderland striker who has enjoyed a productive spell in the North East since moving from Ross County.

The Scotland international might not be good enough to start every week but he has certainly developed into the sort of striker that could play a role in the squad as a backup, he is also more than familiar with the Scottish Premiership and it may be that the 26-year old is about to become available if a report in Football League World is to be believed:

“Sunderland are ready to sell Celtic and Rangers target Ross Stewart in the January transfer window if he does not sign a new contract after lucrative terms were offered to him, sources have exclusively informed Football League World.

“Stewart’s deal at the Stadium of Light only runs until the summer and he is now just a month away from being able to sign a pre-contract with clubs outside England, which would mean he walks away for nothing in the summer.

Sources have exclusively informed FLW that they are ready to cash in on the striker in the January if he does not sign a new contract amid ongoing interest from Celtic and Rangers.”

What isn’t true is that Stewart will be available on a pre-contract agreement in January, he won’t be able to discuss this with Sunderland having the option of extending his current deal by another year first and what club is going to let one of their best players leave for nothing when they could get a sizeable fee for them?

Which begs the question, how much would Stewart cost? The Championship is starting to see similar fees to the Premier League in that clubs are demanding a lot of money and Sunderland would not want to lose him. I just can’t see us being able to sign him for anything remotely like good value for money given that he wouldn’t be the first choice.
