Rangers were clearly in the hunt for a new striker in the summer given that Antonio Colak arrived to add depth to a creaking department, however, he wasn’t the only name that was heavily linked.

Hertha Berlin’s Davie Selke “turned down” a move to Ibrox but, if he could have that decision back, would probably snap Ross Wilson’s hand off for the chance to play regular football.

Recent reports claimed that the 27-year old is on his way out of the Bundesliga side with his contract set to expire at the end of the season and a salary in the region of £50,000 per week an expensive sum to be paying for someone sitting in the stands.

The story has taken an additional twist though with Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg claiming on Twitter that the striker has now demanded to be released:

“The player has made a deposit within the club that he wants to go 100% in winter. Selke wants to attack again! Hertha BSC lets him go, also on a free transfer. Salary should be saved (up to 4 million € including bonuses). Options: Buli, Series A, Championship.”

Plettenberg doesn’t list Rangers as an option but, given Alfredo Morelos’s current contract status, it would be a surprise if we didn’t return for someone who we have clearly watched and deemed a viable target – especially when they are available for free. A transfer that would make losing Morelos for nothing a lot easier to take.

Our wage bill is as high as it’s ever been but, there is a lot of dead wood and surplus money to come off it this season when you look at the big earners who aren’t contributing – on, and off the pitch – on a free transfer, a player with Selkie’s profile makes a lot of sense.
