Rangers interest in Ben Davies has long been reported, in fact, as far back as January 2021 when the then Preston centre-half was winding down his contract and looking to leave on a pre-contract agreement.

Before then though, in 2019, Premier League sides were eyeing the stopper with a fee of £10million not deterring them, however, he stayed at Deepdale and ended up getting a dream move to Liverpool to provide cover in the midst of an injury crisis.

As with every signing, Rangers fans have become accustomed to checking the injury history of potential new recruits and in Davies’s case, his is pretty solid, an issue with his hamstring in 19-20 and 20/21 being the only cause for concern but the length of time that he was out indicates that these were only grade 1 or mild grade 2 strains.

Despite playing more regularly as a centre-half, he has played around a quarter of his senior games at left-back, with Borna Barisic an experienced option already in the squad, it may be that Davies has been identified as the player who can cover both positions although his style of play probably isn’t adventurous enough to regularly play on the flank.

Not every player that we sign will be a project player capable of making us a huge profit in the future, look at Connor Goldson as the best example, sometimes Ross Wilson will need to identify those who can make an immediate impact and provide consistency over a longer period of time.

He may not have played any real game time for Liverpool, however, their recruitment team okayed him as being good enough should he be needed and had we managed to sign him on a pre-contract last year it would have been a deal that was lauded – £4m (£3m plus £1m add-ons) is a sizeable fee for Rangers nowadays but this was the case when we signed Goldson for £3.5m, if we get a left footed version of the vice-captain then it will be money well spent.
