When Rangers declared that a fee of £25million was going to be the figured needed to sign Calvin Bassey more than a few eyebrows were raised given his rapid rise to prominence and his relative inexperience.

With Ajax and Brighton said to be interested, Ross Wilson will be delighted at having two sides with deep pockets potentially entering a bidding war but when “transfer supremo” Fabrizio Romano claimed that €22million was said to have been accepted by Rangers with the Nigerian’s medical the only stumbling block, fans were more than a little disappointed that we may have under sold our most valuable asset.

There was though, a second update. Club media partner Heart and Hand revealing a level of detail that suggests his source – communications director, David Graham – has given him inside information.

That deal looks entirely better than a flat €22m. At the current exchange rates, it translates to roughly £23million including add-ons, the 10% sell on feel should take the total amount over the £25m that Celtic received for Kieran Tierney – if he meets expectations and continues on his current trajectory.

Our sporting director isn’t stupid and there is no way that he would commit us to a deal that didn’t have achievable objectives. I could be wrong, but if there is any chance of us breaking the Scottish transfer record, I don’t think the club will be shy in letting people know about it.
