Ross Wilson has been a busy man this month as he looks to add new recruits to the Rangers squad, taking advantage of pre-contract opportunities wherever possible.

The latest transfer news has seen Football Insider – who announced both Calvin Bassey and Jon McLaughlin deals before anyone else – claim “exclusively” that Preston North End’s Ben Davies has received a “significant offer” to sign for the Light Blues despite Steven Gerrard suggesting otherwise.

The 25-year old centre-half has been in demand for some time now and it has been well publicised that the Championship club has previously quoted as much as £10million for clubs showing an interest in the Cumbrian-born defender.

That fee is said to have halved recently, however, with Rangers able to take advantage of cross-border regulations and not in any rush for a centre-half, they won’t be splashing out any time soon to get the deal done in this window and won’t be held to ransom.

Preston reportedly offered record contracts to both Davies and another Gers target, Daniel Johnson, in an attempt to encourage the pair of them to extend their stays, however, it now appears as if both players are heading for pastures new with Ibrox close to the top of potential destinations.

Davies would be coming in to compete for a first-team slot and as a natural left-footer would be providing competition for Filip Helander and Leon Balogun to partner Connor Goldson, it may be that Balogun gets shifted to the right-hand side if he signs his own extension that Steven Gerrard is keen to see completed.

Where this leaves George Edmundson and Niko Katic is a little less clear but after such a serious injury it is likely that the Croatian international will head out on loan for a season, yes, he is raw, but he has shown enough to suggest that he could one day be a valuable player for us.

Edmundson though could well have played his last game for Rangers and won’t be short of offers, the good thing now is that Gerrard and Wilson are fine tuning a squad rather than overhauling it, and Davies  would certainly be an upgrade on the former Oldham man – if reports are to be believed.
