Rangers’ Glenn Middleton is said to be wanted by Atromitos in Greece as well as Dundee United with a move away from Ibrox appearing inevitable.

The Athens based club are currently coached by former Wales boss Chris Coleman who has been linked with an interest in the 22-year old.

Having spent a long spell on loan at St Johnstone in recent times, for the sake of his career he needs a fresh break elsewhere in order to play regular football which he will not get at Rangers.

The Scotland U21 cap is also under consideration by Jack Ross at Dundee United and having worked together at Hibs, that may be the route that the player wants to pursue.

Important

Greece would provide a great lifestyle, climate and a decent level of football but there would be questions over the extent of stability that would be provided by such a move abroad.

Much of that depends what happens on the pitch and in that regard, that is the biggest battle for Middleton whether he stays in Scotland or opts for a different challenge. He was part of the successful cup winning squad under Callum Davidson at McDiarmid Park but those highs two season ago were replaced by the low depths that St Johnstone fell to, last season with the on loan Ranger not able to help with a telling impact.

He has been deployed as a striker in recent times as well as a winger. Steven Gerrard even suggested that a future at left-back could be the best option for a player who has suffered for his utility capability.

Under Gerrard, Middleton secured an instant impact at Ibrox reaching the dizzy heights of first team involvement and goals in the Europa League but he hasn’t kicked on, leading to the current impasse and almost certain exit to follow.

It won’t be at Rangers but Middleton is a good footballer who can make an impact elsewhere in the game.
