Giovanni van Bronckhorst has delivered a massive and encouraging update on Alfredo Morelos’ new contract negotiations and also a potential further signing at Ibrox to follow, this week.

The manager was speaking live to Sky Sports News, from the open training session ahead of the start to the competitive season at Livingston on Saturday.

Gio fielded questions on a few pertinent matters posed by Sky’s Mark Benstead, including Morelos, potential departures, Champions League possibilities and the goalkeeper dilemma waiting to be answered.

The responses were live-tweeted by myself, available here:

The way GvB embraced the question of Morelos’ future was very encouraging and in fact left the impression that things are close to completion in terms of a new contract. As it stands, both Morelos and Ryan Kent are now in the last year of their respective deals so obviously it would be a great boost to get that business concluded.

The Dutchman went further, unprompted, when talking about his squad.

We all know that the signing of Ridvan Yilmaz is imminent but the boss stated, “We will hopefully sign a new player this week”.

Surely that won’t be in reference to the Turkish full-back, given what is already known? It provides another talking point over the coming days in what is a great time at Rangers. The squad has been improved significantly, there is a healthy competition for places as well as the obvious demand and expectation that comes with life at Ibrox.

Just around the corner is the huge Champions League qualifiers which would deliver even further prestige to the club as well as significant financial stability.

All this and more will be played out over the next few weeks, with the Rangers squad primed and ready for the new season.
