Sheffield United are heading for the Championship, it might not be official but it is only a matter of time.

The Blades have three players in their ranks who have previously been linked with moves to Rangers, one unlikely to ever come to anything – Oli McBurnie – but there are two that are very much on the cards.

John Lundstram has been the subject of speculation for most of the season and for all that he would command big wages, he is out of contract in just a few months and could be tempted at the prospect of linking up with his hero Steven Gerrard and Champions League football.

The more intriguing option is the prospect of a return to Ibrox for John Fleck, transformed from early comparisons to Wayne Rooney to a ball-playing central midfielder, one that has easily held his own in the Premier League.

The former Rangers academy kid took a step back to progress and regular football in the English lower leagues has seen him earn call-ups to the Scotland squad, although he hasn’t had the game time that perhaps his form or ability deserves.

Despite his experience in the Premier League and international status he will be 30 at the start of next season with two years still to run on his current deal, a £7.2million transfer valuation would’t be realistic and half of that could be enough to see him return to his spiritual home.

In what year did Allan McGregor make his Rangers debut?

It would be a transfer out-with the current model but, as we have seen with Steven Davis, there is no reason why we couldn’t get another six years service out of Fleck, which would make it more than worth the money – with Bongani Zungu unlikely to get his loan move converted into a permanent one the space is there in the squad, it’s just a question of whether or not Ross Wilson and Steven Gerrard believe it is a deal that makes sense.
