It’s becoming increasingly apparent that for all that Rangers have a well-balanced and settled squad, there is one position where Ross Wilson really needs to identify a solution for in the summer.

Having a 36-year old Steven Davis as our potential player of the year is a double-edged sword, it says everything about the player’s individual quality, but also raises alarm bells, we need to find someone to step in and give him a rest but also to replace him long-term.

We thought we had signed that in Bongani Zungu but the fact that he has started just one league game shows that Steven Gerrard simply doesn’t trust him to fill the Northern Ireland skipper’s boots – so who can?

I’m never one to wish ill on anyone, but it would be nice if Sheffield United got relegated, why? It would take a few pounds of Jon Fleck’s price tag.

Davis isn’t a typical number six, he covers full-backs and dictates play from deep, but he also supports the attack, there are few players that are available – and in our price range – that could do the same job.

I like Zungu, despite some of the criticism, but he just can’t replace Davis, Fleck can, and if the Blades were to get relegated, there might just be room for manoeuvre on his potential transfer fee.

Is Fleck the man to replace Davis?

Yes

Yes

No

No

He has two years left on his current deal and will be 30 when next season kicks off, they shouldn’t be looking for anything ridiculous but any fee would be written off almost immediately because of his age.

As Davis has shown though, we could still get another 4-6 years out of Fleck easily, there are similar characteristics between the two and the Scotland international might see it as a great opportunity to finish what he started nearly 15 years ago – the prospect of a return to Champions League football isn’t a bad carrot to dangle either.
