Rangers will need to strengthen in midfield next season, there is absolutely no doubt about that, for a variety of reasons that we have already covered at Vital Rangers.

Nnamdi Ofoborh has already been recruited but – like Calvin Bassey – he won’t be expected to be a key player immediately on his arrival and will be gradually introduced to the squad, Cedric Itten has also had this development pathway since arriving at Ibrox.

With Bongani Zungu unlikely to be retained we need another player capable of sitting in front of the back four and orchestrating attacks but on a tight budget, our options are limited.

Remember Dejan Ljubicic? Technically, he was the player responsible for knocking us out of the Europa League in Steven Gerrard’s first season when he scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win for Rapid Vienna on match-day six – a composed finish past Allan McGregor showing exaclty what he is capable of.

He is now Rapid’s captain and at 23-years old still has plenty of time to develop, rated at nearly £3million he is capable of playing either in the middle of the park or as a centre-half, standing at 6ft 2inches tall he would also be well equipped to deal with the physicality of Scottish football.

Do we need a more defence minded midfielder?

No

No

We have always had a good mix of midfielders under Gerrard and Ljubicic would offer another different style to what we have in the squad already, think Ross McCrorie but with a better passing ability and composure on the ball.

Here’s the good part – he’s out of contract in the summer, we’ve been linked with him before, and ticks a lot of the boxes that Ross Wilson looks for when going about his business, you never know, he might just be one of the names on a list of potential targets, we’ll just need to watch this space…
