Carlos Pena, the one-time Rangers midfielder, has signed for Club Deportivo FAS in the El Salvador Primera Division.

The small nation in Central America is the latest staging post for the wayward, journeyman player.

He is pictured below at his Club Deportivo presentation ceremony, alongside the Mayor of Santa Ana where the club is based.

Pena, 30, was a very miscalculated signing at Ibrox during the ill-fated reign of Pedro Caixinha with the reported transfer fee said to be £2.7 million.

He managed five goals over 14 appearances during his time in Glasgow, but off-field issues, fitness problems as well as general poor quality and lack of professionalism tell more of the short lived spell of the Mexican international in Scotland.

A quite expensive flop that should never have been sanctioned, although that could apply to the Portuguese manager as well as the player.

It is quite an amazing fall from grace for a player given the ‘Gullit’ nickname due to a supposed reminisence of the Dutch legend Ruud, in his earlier career, who won himself a place in Mexico’s 2014 World Cup squad, making one appearance as a substitute in the game against Croatia.

For his senor national team in total, the player has made 9 appearances, scoring two goals.

It seems unlikely he will be adding to that tally given his path in recent times.

After he was banished at Ibrox, the player made a move to GKS Tychy in the Polish second tier, followed up with stints in the Mexican second division.

He now has a stage in El Salvador in the latest attempt to rekindle a fading career.
