The ugly head of racism has never been far from the headlines over the last 12-months and Rangers were thrust front and centre when Glen Kamara was targeted by Ondrej Kudela in the Europa League clash with Slavia Prague.

Stewart Robertson has been speaking to Sky Sports about how the bigger picture needs to be addressed and how the recent abuse suffered by the likes of Kamara and Kemar Roofe on social media can be resolved, as reported by The Daily Record:

“There has been a lot of commentary on the last few weeks on the social media companies and how government can interact with that.

“You’d rather government didn’t have to enforce, but maybe that is where we are going to get to, to make social media take more care about what the individuals put on their social media feeds. I think that is one of the key areas where this happens. You wouldn’t invite some of these guys into your house to abuse you with what they put on their social media accounts.

“I hope the summit will see some real action and is the first meeting of many.”

Rangers managing director is correct, there needs to be more accountability on social media, being able to create anonymous profiles before abusing other individuals on the platform is unacceptable and is easy to resolve.

Disagreeing with someone is one thing, targeting someone for abuse is a criminal offence and as a result there should be ways and means to see them face justice – it shouldn’t be down to football clubs to resolve this and the silence, particularly from the Scottish Government recently, has been deafening.
