The two positions where we could see high-profile signings in the summer are most likely to be in goals and up front, Michael Beale has hinted as much and the core of the squad is starting to look a lot better now that players are returning from injury.
He might have said that he has his eye on one striker in particular, however, I’d still expect to see two new arrivals to add to Antonio Colak and Kemar Roofe, even if Alfredo Morelos signs a contract extension.
One of those could be Joel Piroe who, at Swansea City, has enjoyed a productive time in the Championship since signing from PSV Eindhoven with 38 goals and has just a year left on his current deal.
Writing for Football League World, Adam Jones reckons that the former Dutch youth cap could be an astute signing and one that might Ross Wilson not have to break the bank for:
“At 23, he will only get better but only has one year left on his contract, so the Scottish Premiership side may not have to fork out too much to get him.
“Adapting well to life in the UK when he linked up with the Swans, you would back him to make a good start at Ibrox too, with his 13 goals in 34 league appearances this season showing just how much of an asset he can be in the final third.
“And already becoming accustomed to an attractive style of play, he should be a good ball player for Rangers if he did link up with them.”
As with Piroe, this rumour has gone a little bit under the radar but he certainly ticks a lot of the boxes that we would be looking for when assessing potential strikers.
The Championship, as much through financial necessity than any real rise in quality, has seen price tags rise in recent seasons, however, Piroe’s contract might make Swansea a little easier to deal with, especially if the player himself decides that European football and the chance to win trophies is where he wants to take the next step in his career.
