Michael Beale attempted to put to bed the constant questioning regarding the future of Alfredo Morelos at Rangers by saying that nothing will be decided until the end of the season and that the focus will purely be on finishing the season on a high.
Of course, questions will continue to be asked and the Gers gaffer will have to respond to requests for updates and speculation about where his next destination might be won’t end until his future is confirmed.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, transfer journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Morelos has always had his eye on a move away from the club and, with his contract about to expire, he will never get a better chance to control his destiny:
“I think with him there has always been hope that big things might still be around the corner.
“If you look back now on his record, the numbers aren’t really there. It probably is time for a fresh start for Morelos.”
I agree with the sentiment, Morelos himself has admitted – quite openly – that he would like to play in one of Europe’s better leagues where he wouldn’t have to play on plastic pitches, be subject to inept part-time officiating or play the same team as many as eight times in a season – I still have nightmares about the season we played Aberdeen and Kilmarnock a combined 15 times.
What I don’t agree with is Jones’s comment about the numbers. If he is referring to goal contributions then he is wide of the mark. Even this season, despite playing second fiddle to Antonio Colak for long periods, he has managed to accrue 10 goals and seven assists in less than 20 full games in terms of minutes.
Replacing him at his peak was always going to be a tough ask but as an option off the bench when he has nine league goals and six assists in just 10 starts won’t be easy either but the signs are looking increasingly more likely that he will be leaving in the summer, if Ross Wilson didn’t already have his troubles to seek.
