As Scotland struggles in the current international break to create chances, a penny for Ryan Gauld‘s thoughts as he sits in the Portuguese sunshine reflecting on what might have been.

At Vital Rangers we have declared our love for the Farense midfielder on more than one occasion this season and with the 25-year old’s side currently just a point off the bottom of the Primeira Liga there is every chance that he will be able to walk away from his contract for free at the end of the season.

There is an option of another year and a release clause of £3.6million (give or take depending on exchange rate) but these become null and void if Farense don’t survive  the drop, and if they do go down, it certainly won’t be from the man once hailed as the “Scottish Messi” not giving his all.

Eredivisie scout and analyst Marc Lamberts has provided an in depth look in to what Gauld does best and how – despite his club’s lowly league position – he can be compared against some of Portugal’s best when it comes to creating chances for his team mates.

Lamberts, in summary, has been impressed with what he has seen from Gauld and isn’t surprised that he is attracting attention:

“Ryan Gauld has gotten invaluable experience in Portugal and is having quite the season. His attacking contribution via key passing has definitely sparked interest from scouts and recruitment analysts in Portugal and Scotland, but also in the rest of Europe.

“Performing in this kind of league with these decisive passes is a hard thing to do. I appreciate this is only a small element of his game, but there’s no doubt interesting stuff to be said about the player.”

With interest in Ianis Hagi from Italy, could Gauld be the man to fill the Romanian playmaker’s boots without costing a penny or should he be signed to add depth to an already quality Rangers attack? My mind was already made up to be honest but after reading just how good he really is, it’s a definite “yes” from me.
