For years we have had to elect a Player of the Year based on trying to work out who wasn’t as bad as the rest, particularly in seasons when there wasn’t a stand out performer.

This season is an altogether different story and you could make a case for as many as six or seven Ranger players to win the club’s award and the SPFL’s.

Allan McGregor missed a few games at the start of the season through injury and Jon McLaughin stepped inbreaking a record in the process – but all this did was inspire the 39-year old to reach new heights with a host of sensational stops confirming him still as Scotland’s best keeper.

In front of McGregor, Connor Goldson hasn’t missed a minute all season and has been fundamental towards organising a defence that has only just conceded double figures in the league, a remarkable achievement in it’s own right, and then you factor in that he has eight goals and three assists – there are midfielders that don’t have those numbers.

James Tavernier had looked to be coasting towards a clean sweep of every POTY award going before Christmas when he was on course for over 20 goals and 20 assists, however, the skipper’s untimely knee injury has probably ended these hopes and if he doesn’t return to full fitness soon he is unlikely to be one of the front runners – don’t write him off just yet though.

In midfield, Steven Davis has been metronomic, in key games he has frequently been the player upping the tempo and driving forwards when it was needed most, think Livingston away and Alfredo Morelos’s late winner, the Northern Ireland skipper had no right to be as far up as he was. He’s been class all season and in the games that he has been rested his absence has been sorely felt.

A notable absentee from the list is Alfredo Morelos, he may not have had the same blistering goal scoring form as previous seasons but is still going to end up with over 30 goal involvements, on it’s own merits, he has had a good season and, if anything, has improved as a player. When we needed him most during the run in he stepped up with a series of fine performances winning player of the month for March in the process, cometh the hour, cometh the man and all that but he just hasn’t been as consistent as the four already mentioned.

So, it’s now up to you, who is your Vital Rangers Player of the Year for 2020/21, cast your vote below.
