Needs must as Wilson looks to replicate Katic move to solve Gers crisis

|

About a week ago you would have struggled to identify an area in which Rangers needed to add immediate cover, however, with both Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack out for the immediate future, reinforcements in midfield is now a necessity.

With Steven Gerrard preferring a three man engine room, with just four fully fit bodies left, and we can’t expect Steven Davis to play every week, being able to rotate and make substitutes is one of the main reasons why we are currently sitting top of the league.

We have been linked with midfielders since football kicked off again with the likes of John Lundstram, Daniel Johnson and Kenny McLean rumoured to be on a list of names on Ross Wilson’s desk, the former in particular has been tipped to head out the door of Sheffield United in January and would offer more than just a short-term fix.

The other option, and least expensive, is to recall Stephen Kelly from Ross County, the Scotland youth cap has adapted well to Premiership football and could provide cover from the bench whilst also giving the management team the chance to assess him playing with better players, in a system that suits his aggressive passing style.

The gaffer has already said he expects there to be a few departures with fringe players like Jamie Barjonas and Greg Stewart likely to join Glen Middleton in leaving on various deals, the latter potentially heading to Holland for the rest of the season.

We moved swiftly to cover Niko Katic’s injury and I’d expect us to already have something in place for when the January window opens, if we’ve learned something since he arrived, it’s that Wilson can be trusted to find the right player at the right price when the need arises.
