Steven Gerrard has hinted at a few departures in the January transfer window and after the max exodus in the summer, it is no surprise that any players who are not making an impact will be cleared off the wage bill.

Now, more than ever, when every penny counts, one of Ross Wilson’s key roles will be to make sure that we are getting the absolute most out of the players in the squad and that any dead wood is removed to make way for others than can contribute more effectively.

There are a few obvious fringe men who could be told that their future lies elsewhere with the sporting director hopefully negotiating deals similar to the ones that saw Jamie Murphy and Ross McCrorie move to Hibs and Aberdeen respectively.

Jamie Barjonas is in footballing limbo, currently seventh choice in midfield but also doesn’t gain anything playing for the academy, he will be allowed to leave at the earliest opportunity, that his contract is expiring at the end of the season means that any offer to get his wages paid for should be taken.

Greg Stewart is little more than a bit part player, rarely making the match day squad even though more bodies are allowed this term, similar to Murphy, he could easily cause problems out on loan at another SPFL club – he’s never let us down but also, he’s never really been given the opportunity due to the form of those in front of him.

Who scored Rangers first competitive goal of the season?

The biggest question mark will be around Jordan Jones and George Edmundson, the gaffer has suggested that they have a future at the club but, personally, I think they should be shown the door, their actions could have had the most severe of consequences and as such, their lack of respect for the club, management, teammates and fans should be dealt with accordingly.

We may see one or two faces to freshen the squad up and if Wilson has the same strike rate as he had in the summer, it could provide the boost that would see us continue our charge for silverware.
