Rangers have been given encouragement in their pursuit of Sheffield United’s John Lundstram after a report in Glasgow Live revealed that the Blades are looking to offload him in January rather than lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

United’s gaffer Chris Wilder had looked to keep a hold of the Englishman, however, he is now resigned to him leaving, not that this will stop him from picking one of his key players over the last few seasons:

“It’s not an ideal situation and I want ideal situations.

“I’d love John to stop.

“Whoever I pick, they’ll go out there. Whatever happens, there’s no downside to John going out there and doing well.”

Lundstram, at 26-years old, is approaching his peak years and, with a valuation of over £7million on transfermarkt, wouldn’t come cheap despite his contract status, Steven Gerrard has said that it could be a quiet month for signing new players with a few expected to leave, however, if the right player is available at the right price, it shouldn’t be ruled out.

Do we need any new players in January?

No

No

Although we are well catered for in midfield at the moment, Lundstram would represent a great piece of forward planning with Scott Arfield and Steven Davis both far enough into their 30s that we should be thinking about how to replace them.

Every transfer window has seen a gradual improvement in the squad and wholesale changes are no longer needed but signing a player who is proven at both Championship and Premier League level would only serve to enhance the squad further – if we can get it over the line.
