Steven Gerrard is being tipped to show patience in his pursuit of one of his reported midfield targets with the news that a pre-contract deal is being lined up for Sheffield United’s John Lundstram, according to The Daily Record.

The 26-year old has just 12-months left with Rangers able to make an offer in January and negate the need to pay a transfer fee, he had been rumoured to be on the Gers gaffer’s shortlist this summer but the “imminent” arrivals that he spoke of before the international break doesn’t look like they will include the Englishman.

Midfield had looked to be a priority area that required to be strengthened, however, as yet, it remains the only department that hasn’t seen any new faces and with the subtle tactical tweak that Gerrard has employed since dropping points at Livingston, he may have had a re-think.

With no action to get excited about, transfer rumours and speculation are the main source of distraction until Dundee United come to Ibrox this weekend with three points an absolute must to continue the impressive start to the season in which a new record for consecutive clean sheets has been set.

Should Gerrard try to get Lundstram in during the summer or get him on a free?

Lundstram may have been put on the back burner for now but it appears that the £7million rated star is seen as a credible long-term replacement for the likes of Steven Davis and Scott Arfield with the rebuilding of his Rangers squad nearing completion.

The potential departure of Alfredo Morelos could yet impact the gaffer’s plans over the coming weeks and an extra £20m in the coffers would be greatly appreciated as he looks to consolidate his side’s position at the top of the league.
