A report in The Athletic has named Rangers as one of several interested parties in Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram with the 26-year old currently at the centre of a contract impasse with the Premier League side.

The Blades recently took up the one-year option on the contract of Lundstram to ensure that they didn’t lose him for nothing this summer and so that, if the player does want to leave, they can secure a decent transfer fee in the process.

According to Richard Sutcliffe of The Athletic, Rangers face competition for Burnley and West Ham for the £7million rated, former England youth international, although they might not be able to match their spending power, the prospect of continental competition at this stage of his career could sway his decision in the Ibrox club’s favour.

Should the board dig deep to get Lundstram signed up?

On top of Lundstram’s five goals and three assists, The Athletic also claims that he has a key role in creating chances for his teammates, and playing in a more possession dominant team with clinical strikers could see Rangers finally get the box-to-box midfielder that would take the pressure of Joe Aribo:

“Opta had Lundstram down as creating eight of what the data experts deem to be “big chances” during 2019-20. Only Stevens, with nine, could better that tally among the United squad.”

He certainly fits the profile of signing that Steven Gerrard was looking for at the start of the season, a player that can improve the starting XI, can add goals and creativity to his midfield as well as having elite level experience, all from a player approaching his peak rather than a developing player or one on the decline.

The Gers gaffer has already been backed financially and the acquisition of Lundstram really would be something of a coup given the interest from around the Premier League, however, if Rangers want to win the league this season, every effort should be made to encourage a player of the Liverpudlian’s quality that a successful future lies north of the border.
