Recently departed Rangers utility man, Andy Halliday, believes that any money brought into the club through possible sales should be given to Steven Gerard and, that if his boyhood club wants to win the league, now isn’t the time for budget buys.

Speaking on the Keeping the Ball on the Ground podcast, podcast and reported by The Daily Record, Halliday was reacting to the news that Leeds United have made an offer for Ryan Kent, as well as the likely departure of Alfredo Morelos to Lille.

When Kevin Kyle – yes, that Kevin Kyle – suggested that Martin Boyle of Hibs would be a suitable, and cost effective replacement for Kent should he leave, Halliday replied:

“I get what you’re saying, I just think it’s not the year for cheap replacements. If they sell him (Kent), they need to spend all the money.

“I think, and if you’d asked me last year I wouldn’t have wanted to lose either, now Ryan Kent would be the bigger loss (over Morelos).

“You’d like to think they’ve replaced Morelos with Roofe and Itten, they’ve got two other attacking options.

“If you lose Ryan Kent you need to spend all the money to find a replacement.”

Although spending all the money wouldn’t be necessary or fit the transfer model that Ross Wilson has put into place at Ibrox, the point he is making is a valid one, Kent is a key player and as such should be replaced with a known quantity and not a project player to be developed.

Should Gerrard be given any money from transfer sales this summer?

Yes

Yes

No

No

As it is, the 23-year old isn’t leaving anytime soon and Leeds will have to look elsewhere, however, with Morelos set to bring in around £18million, it would be nice if Gerrard was given a little extra pocket money before the window closes to bring in a goalscoring midfielder and another forward – we can but dream.
