With the news that Rangers have submitted an offer for Aberdeen’s Scott Wright, speculation has already begun about who could be heading out the door or in the opposite direction.

Greg Stewart has been at Aberdeen before but wasn’t played in a position that suits his strengths so is unlikely to head north, even if there is the potential for more playing time.

If Steven Gerrard does get the deal for Wright through the door, the obvious exit would be that of Jordan Jones given his recent exploits, he had fought his way back into first-team reckoning and excelled in games against Willem II and Motherwell only to shoot himself in the foot.

Moving to Aberdeen would suit both parties, even if it is just on loan, he gets game time and Rangers get him in the shop window, however, The Scotsman has claimed that the Dons are looking to get Ross McCrorie’s move made permanent ahead of the summer as part of any deal involving Wright going to Ibrox in this window.

Former Gers full-back, Alan Hutton believes that it is only a matter of time before the two fringe players head out the door though, in an interview with Football Insider:

“You would think that there would have to be some sort of movement, I think this is a problem most clubs have at the moment, I’m talking England, everywhere.

“They’re normally waiting for that first person to move, to trim their squad, before the movement starts.

“So these players – Jones and Stewart – I think he’d like to trim that squad down but he’ll definitely have his eye on bringing one or two in to bring even more competition to the squad that’s already there.”

Gerrard has spoken about the potential for fringe players to head out and Jones and Stewart are miles away from the first-team just now, the latter is out of contract in the summer as well so it may be a chance for him to improve his options.

Does Jones deserve another chance?

Being able to fine tune the squad is something that the gaffer has not yet been afforded but this window has given him that opportunity, minor adjustments, not major overhaul, are all that is needed to secure title number 55.
