I’ve gone full circle on Lewis Ferguson if I’m being honest.

To start off with I’ve never been convinced that he is technically good enough to play in a Rangers midfield and that he would end up being no different to Greg Docherty, sold to a lower league English side with a sell-on clause.

But, with the season finally over I’ve been able to look a bit more into his playing style and where he would fit into our squad, something that Alan Hutton, speaking to Football Insider, thinks he would do seamlessly:

“I think he’s been an excellent player for Aberdeen. He‘s probably got to that stage of his career where he wants to kick on.

“That’s no disrespect to Aberdeen, I think they’ve done fantastic over the years but he’s ready for that step up now. I think he could thrive playing alongside the likes of Steven Davis, Ryan Jack. They are outstanding players that help young boys come through.

“I think it’d be an excellent move for him. I believe that he could add something to that Rangers midfield. He’s got a little bit of bite, a little bit of dig about him, the way Ryan Jack is.

“I think you always need that within your squad, as well as quality. He’d be a welcome addition if they could get it done. I think Gerrard likes that type of player that is technically good but he’s got that aggressiveness about him. It would be one I’d be excited about.”

The only thing I disagree on with Hutton is who he compares Ferguson to, even in the last game of the season – sitter aside – he looked more like a player that could fill the role that Scott Arfield does, not afraid to do the dirty work, but also capable of running beyond the front three and getting into good goal scoring positions.

Who finished as Rangers top goal scorer this season?

I don’t think he would immediately command a stating slot but if there’s one thing that we have learned during Steven Gerrard’s reign it’s that he can develop a midfielder, a hybrid of Jack and Arfield would be perfect for our midfield, if the fee is £4million though, I’m not so sure.
