Rangers are interested in joining the race for Aberdeen midfielder Lewis Ferguson following the Scotland youth cap’s decision to hand in a transfer request.

The 21-year old has been the subject of a bid from Premier League new boys Watford this week with a reported £1.2million offer being branded as “insulting” by the Dons as they look to hold onto one of, if not the, best player at the club.

Steven Gerrard is an admirer of Ferguson – with 10 goals and five assists this season – who of course has Ibrox connections though his dad Derek and uncle Barry, but it is more likely to be his ratio of a goal or assist every three games that has seen him linked with a move to his “spiritual home” as reported by Football Insider:

“Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Rangers are planning to join the race for the goalscoring central midfielder.

“They have long held an interest in the Scotland Under-21 international and are confident he is “desperate” to join if a deal can be agreed.”

Ferguson does have some decent qualities, for a start he has a physicality that is essential for life in the Scottish Premiership, although his yellow and red card count would no doubt rise the moment the colour of his strip changes, he is also – despite his howler against us last weekend – the most similar midfielder to Scott Arfield in the country in that he has an uncanny knack of getting into the box at the right time and running past the strikers to cause problems.

I’ve been harsh on Ferguson before, not through any fault of his own but I don’t think he is worth what Aberdeen are wanting for him, however, we have seen with Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara that the one thing our coaching team is good at is developing midfielders, it could, be money well spent in the long run.
