After struggling to break Livingston down at the weekend, Steven Gerrard will undoubtedly be looking to add further resources – particularly to midfield – but recent transfer news has centre around two possible departures from the engine room.

The Gers gaffer has been open about recent speculation linking both Ross McCrorie and Greg Docherty with moves away from the club and once again – the former having just joined Aberdeen on an initial loan deal with the obligation to buy – Gerrard gave an update on the situations of the two Scotland youth internationals, as reported by The Daily Record:

“We are waiting for Greg to make a decision. Hull are at the table with a good deal and opportunity for him. It’s not going to work for Greg at Rangers so we are waiting on his decision.

“Ross is close. He has a couple of options on the table. Again, we are waiting for a decision really.”

Their departures would do little other that free up space in the roster and get wages off the weekly bill with neither of them featuring in the match day squad for the first four domestic fixtures of the season.

Adding players who can improve the starting XI and options off the bench has always been Gerrard’s priority this summer and the arrivals of Cedric Itten, Kemar Roofe, Jon McLaughlin, Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun has certainly done that, however, there is one area that has yet to be touched.

Gerrard moaned about a lack of spark during his side’s poor run of form in early 2020 and yet he hasn’t addressed the lack of a goalscoring central midfielder, other than Joe Aribo, who does his best work in and around the box.

Is it time for McCrorie and Docherty to move on?

Yes

No

No

Fans of the Light Blues won’t “miss” Docherty and McCrorie given their lack of game time, but they will be hoping that the manager finally looks to solve the creative midfield issues that hold his team back from sweeping aside teams like Livingston easier than they currently do.
