Gio’s big call the only talking point ahead of Perth trip

Managers are paid to make the big decisions and Giovanni van Bronckhorst has never been shy of making them in the past, at Feyenoord, he dropped club captain and legend Dirk Kuyt and now he has to do something similar at Rangers.

The announcement of the team to play St Johnstone will have all eyes on one position, the name right at the top of the list and who lines up in goals.

Publicly, the manager has to back Allan McGregor but behind closed doors, analysis of some of the goals we have lost recently will not make for pretty viewing.

Any other player, in any other position would be dropped.

If you are Callum Davidson and McGregor plays, it makes his tactics a lot more straight forward – in-swinging corners, free-kicks and plenty of crosses.

It’s a ridiculously basic game plan but you just need to look at the goals that we have conceded domestically to see where our weaknesses lie, having a keeper who refuses to leave his goal line is far from ideal in the modern game.

The flip side of this is that we need to start finishing teams off properly, obviously, being 2-0 up at home should be enough to win any game but we simply haven’t been taking our chances.

Bizarrely though, we shouldn’t approach the game any differently to the last two where we have dominated possession, played the game in our opponents half and had over 60 attempts at goal, if it’s frustrating for us as fans, Gio must be tearing his hair out.

We’re at the stage of the season where points far outweigh performance – winning every game between now and the Old Firm isn’t even up for debate, no arguments, no excuses.
