Steven Gerrard mumped about having key players missing a few times this season, not being able to get any real consistency with his selection, the irony that he left with just Filip Helander on the treatment table isn’t lost.

Over the last two games in particular we have seen both Ryan Jack and Ryan Kent return after long lay offs, the latter looking as sharp as he has ever done in a Light Blue shirt.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Gers gaffer, Alex McLeish believes that his return couldn’t have come at a better time:

“When Ryan was playing last season, he was getting criticism for his form.

“Obviously we know he was probably playing too much and had a bit of injury.

“But he has come back with a resurgence. He certainly knows what he’s doing on the pitch.

“He is only going to get better as well. I still think he has a huge future in football.

“We saw how brilliant he was against Brondby with the assist then the goal at the weekend.

“His return gives the whole place a lift, I’m sure.”

Almost instantly the dynamic of our attack changed, Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos are both good strikers but they need ammunition – with Fashion Sakala and Kent in the attack we looked like we were going to score every time we got into the final third, their pace causing serious problems for the Ross County defence, their mobility and movement meant that the opposition couldn’t get set.

With a new manager likely to be in place, we need our best players to step up to the plate and make his job easier on a match day, if Kent continues to display the sort of form he showed against Brondby and Ross County, the difficult run of games we have will be a lot easier to navigate.
