The recent transfer talk around Scott Wright has given cause for debate amongst Rangers fans, not about the Scotland Under-21 cap but his international team-mate and current Ibrox exile, Ross McCrorie.

Steven Gerrard mentioned that the deal that saw McCrorie head north on loan, with the deal being made permanent at the end of the season, could be re-negotiated to help get the move for Wright across the line in this window and even though we knew that the utility player won’t don the Light Blues shirt again, it reminded us that his future lies elsewhere.

The gaffer has always been a fan of McCrorie but unfortunately for the player, he just wasn’t getting the game time that he wanted and – without formally asking for a transfer request – sought to move to pastures new.

But with lockdown comes plenty of time for reminiscing and when you watch back Old Firm derbies and Europa League ties in which McCrorie played under Gerrard, it’s easy to see why he was an admirer, his energy in midfield and ability to win first and second balls is a huge asset, particularly if there are seven other players that are more capable of contributing to the attack and playing “killer” balls.

Would you have liked McCrorie to play a bigger part?

No

Ultimately, his role was just too specific and not being able to adapt and become a more rounded player like Ryan Jack or Glen Kamara saw him become little more than a last resort, however, you just know that when he is allowed to play against us next season he is going to be one of the best players on the park, that Aberdeen have lost just twice in the league with him in their side speaks volumes of his influence in a team that has space for a player of his type – sadly, we just didn’t.
