After Vital Rangers suggested a move for Tom Lawrence in January and Ross Wilson took the hint, it appears as though our sporting director may be considering another name that we have mentioned in the past.

Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley has been deemed surplus to requirements by Thomas Tuchel – the 28-year old having just been released from his contract – and, as reported on his Patreon site, well-respected journalist Alan Nixon has claimed that Rangers are “looking into a deal” for the England international.

When Celtic were linked a few weeks ago it didn’t make much sense given how they play but it’s definitely a hole in our squad that needs to be filled.

The perception that Barkley, with 33-England caps, is injury prone isn’t really a fair tag to label him with, the biggest problem in recent years has purely been about him not fitting into Tuchel’s system.

On paper, he is exactly what we need. A proper box-to-box midfielder who can pass or dribble through defensive lines, Barkley would be a good fit for a team that dominates possession – he’s also not shy to pull the trigger from outside the box.

After announcing expensive Champions League ticket prices, fans will be expecting something else in return over the next few days in the shape of quality additions to the squad, if we can’t attract a higher calibre of player when we’ve just qualified for the group stages then we never will.

Chelsea don’t have to be dealt with now and Wilson is known for his ability to drive a hard bargain so it might just be a transfer that we could pull off – if he doesn’t, he better have something else up his sleeve.
