With it looking increasingly unlikely that Rangers will make Aaron Ramsey’s move from Juventus a permanent one, the need for a genuine goalscoring threat and creativity from midfield will be one that is pretty close to the top of our shopping list in the summer.

It’s a position where we could probably only count Ianis Hagi and Joe Aribo as potential options but, despite their obvious ability, neither are consistent enough in the final third.

Looking to the Premier League and one potential option is 33-cap England international Ross Barkley, a player who has never truly fulfilled his potential and who is certain to be leaving Chelsea when the transfer window opens.

It just hasn’t worked out for the 28-year old at Stamford Bridge, we have seen glimpses of what he is capable of but the various manager’s have rarely employed a system that would get the best out of him or have gone out and bought better players.

The first, and most obvious issue, is wages. Normally we wouldn’t be able to afford such a player but having spent his whole career in England’s top flight, I doubt that he is short a bob or two, however, the chance to win trophies and compete in Europe as one of our key players might outweigh a relegation battle or mid-table obscurity – it would certainly do no harm to ask.

In the Scottish Premiership we need players who can find space when there isn’t any or beat a defender 1v1, Barkley is capable of both and would be the sort of marquee signing that not only gets fans excited but would persuade others in the squad to extend their stays, shy bairns get nowt and all that.
