Vital Rangers reported this week that Rangers are reportedly in talks with Sochi striker Mateo Cassierra, the 25-year old Colombian who has been in fine form in the Russian Premier League.

Known to both Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Dave Vos, Cassierra still has one year left on his contract but is still well within our usual budget, a move which could be made easier after his agent revealed via HITC, that other top sides have been ruled out of the bidding:

“Several clubs are talking to me about the transfer of Cassierra – Russian clubs are not interested in Mateo. Let’s see what will happen next”.

Sport 24 is the outlet that reported the original rumour and with Martin Araoz keeping the press informed, it’s a transfer that we could see being played out in public, certainly on the Russian end of the deal anyway.

Cassierra, if you missed our previous report, has a lot going for him, 14 goals and six assists in 23 games is only the tip of the iceberg in that he has everything needed to lead the line as a sole striker.

There is no doubt, as the last few weeks of the season proved, that we need reinforcements in attack. Alfredo Morelos is usually reliable these days in terms of availability and his quality has never been in doubt, likewise with Kemar Roofe, we know he is a fine player but we just can’t trust him to be fit for 50 plus games a season.

Getting this sort of striker in early would give fans, the players and the manager a boost and may even persuade those who are mulling over contract extensions that it is worth sticking around a little while longer.
