Vital Rangers reported on an article in The Times this week, in which, it claimed that Aston Villa were “closing in” on a deal for Calvin Bassey, the 22-year old defending having risen to prominence beyond our wildest dreams after two blockbuster appearances in the Europa League and Scottish Cup final.

Writing on their Patreon site, The 4th Official backed up these claims, however, Steven Gerrard’s side isn’t the only team from down south said to be interested in the Nigerian international when they reported on The Times story:

“This is true, but it lacks some important context. According to my sources, Rangers have over 6 clubs interested in Bassey right now and Aston Villa are one of them.

“Rangers are in absolutely no hurry to get the deal done (unless someone puts in a manic offer) as they know that this is a great position to be in right now.

“So one of Aston Villa, West Ham and the others will have to show their willingness to go the extra mile to get this done quickly. I suspect (and I want to be clear that this part is speculation on my part) that nothing less than £25million will do the job here.”

Clubs being interested in Bassey is a hard one because he is now a key player and hugely important in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s tactics in terms of being able to switch between a back three and back four, however, with so many clubs rumoured to be keeping tabs on the situation, a bidding war could well bump up a transfer fee that is already likely to be a record, Sky Sports claiming that £25m is the starting price for bids.

It’s not just the quantity of clubs either, it’s the quality, Villa, Chelsea and Bayern Munich all have very deep pockets and those are just the ones that we are aware of, teams like this tend not to hang around for fear of missing out and what might seem like a huge amount of money for us, is peanuts for them.

The thing is, as with the case of Nathan Patterson, we could comfortably cope with Bassey leaving. Borna Barisic would remain as first-choice left back and we won the league with Leon Balogun and Filip Helander rotating alongside Connor Goldson, surely the experienced duo can’t be as unlucky with injuries again next year?

Yes, seeing him go would be a huge blow, however, this is what we need to get used to, our best and most promising talent being sold for big fees, the days of selling on the cheap are long gone.
