A few months ago it was Alfredo Morelos, Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara and Ryan Kent that most Rangers fans would have thought were likely to be the subject of interest from the Premier League and beyond, however, under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Calvin Bassey has transformed himself into one of the continent’s most sought after defenders.

Being able to move between a variety of positions without looking uncomfortable only adds a few more pounds to his price tag, with the club valuing him – as Vital Rangers predicted – in a similar bracket to that of Kieran Tierney, who left Celtic for a Scottish record of £25million.

Sky Sports have confirmed former manager, Steven Gerrard’s interest, but they also went one further in revealing just how much it would take for Ross Wilson to even entertain picking up the phone:

“Aston Villa are among a number of Premier League clubs who have made enquiries about Rangers’ highly-rated defender Calvin Bassey.

“Bassey is also being tracked by clubs in the Bundesliga and it is understood it would take a bid in excess of £25m – the current record received by a Scottish club when Kieran Tierney left Celtic for Arsenal – to bring Rangers to the negotiating table over a potential sale.”

Sky Sports aren’t the oracle they used to be, however, they do have a pretty good filter in terms of accuracy, they don’t tend to report something unless there is, at least, a semblance of truth to the story.

As well as his versatility, Bassey has all the physical attributes and clean injury history that make him the perfect signing, he has shown he can compete at the highest level and yet there is still room, incredibly, for him to improve, unfortunately, it’s looking less and less likely that we will see him in a light blue shirt again.
