Could £4.95m Gers midfielder be sacrificed for greater good?

Just to clarify, I’m a fan of John Lundstram and genuinely believe that, if we sold Glen Kamara, he would be the right player to step into the role of the Finland international.

I accept that this isn’t a universally popular opinion but if you cast your mind back to the autumn, Lundstram was picking up man of the match awards on a near weakly basis playing as the main central midfielder, tidying up defensively and being instrumental in dictating our tempo – in contrast, when he has played alongside Steven Davis or Kamara as part of a double pivot it just hasn’t worked at all.

He’s an aggressive passer of the ball in that he likes to move the ball forwards rather than play simple, square balls to team-mates but, since Giovanni van Bronckhorst came along, he has barely kicked a ball. A rare start against Dundee United was aborted at half-time when the manager realised the shape needed to be changed.

With this in mind, like Nathan Patterson, Lundstram has become a very saleable asset in that he has cost us nothing, other than his wages, is a virtual fringe player but, would command a transfer fee well into the millions – currently valued at £4.95million on Transfermarkt – his reputation in England won’t have been harmed purely because Glen Kamara is keeping him out the team.

From which country does Dundee United keeper Benjamin Siegrist come from?

As I said, I like Lundstram and think he will get better once he has adjusted to life in a team that dominates possession, it’s a completely different role to the one he has been playing his whole career and this sort of adaptation doesn’t happen over night, even more so if you aren’t playing regularly but, if we can make some decent money on him and Van Bronckhorst has a target in mind that is better suited to how we play then it would be an easy decision to come to terms with.

With Middlesbrough, amongst other teams from down south said to be interested, we might not have to wait long to find out.

I think we should keep him. He is a good player, Kamara will be off in the next 18 months at the latest and a lot if other players will be leaving too.
So keep him and blend him in.
