Rangers suffered a potential blow in their “pursuit” of Kenny McLean with the news that the Scotland international could be out for the rest of the season, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

Norwich City gaffer, Daniel Farke, revealed that the 28-year old twisted his knee against Middlesbrough at the weekend and that he has suffered a tear to his meniscus cartilage.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Canaries boss said:

“We scanned him [McLean] this morning after he twisted his knee and he has a meniscus tear.

“We will wait for the injury to settle down and he’ll see a specialist this week. We will also handle this in a conservative way.

“He will be out for six weeks or if he needs surgery it could be four to five months.”

Rangers have been linked with £3million rated McLean before and in a similar pattern to the pursuit of Kemar Roofe, it appears as though once a player has been identified as a target, they aren’t scored off the list, even if they move clubs.

Having started around 30% of Norwich City’s league games this season, Scotland’s penalty hero had looked to be heading out of East Anglia and a possible return to the SPFL, the championship leaders would have been an attractive proposition.

How many senior players did Rangers sign this summer?

We have seen how Ross Wilson operates in terms of how he likes to structure deals and a loan-to-buy offer might have been enough to tempt the Championship leaders to part with his services.

Another midfielder certainly wasn’t desperately needed, that Steven Gerrard’s men were able to over power Aberdeen without Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Bongani Zungu in the starting XI shows exactly how strong we are in the engine room, however, if McLean – with 17 Scotland caps to his name –  makes a speedy recovery, he could yet achieve his boyhood dream.
